Welcome back, everyone! I’m continuing my series of answering a question a day here on the blog, in time for our new episode of Kindred Spirits on Friday night at 9/8c. on Travel Channel.
Today’s question is:
“What do you do to protect yourself? Aren’t you afraid of something following you home?”
When it comes time to protect yourself during paranormal investigations, I don’t do anything out of the ordinary before I go on an investigation. I am of the opinion that I am strong enough to enter a building and not be vulnerable to any spirits or entities. Many people like to pray, or bring something protective with them. Personally, I am of the opinion that if I told myself I had to rely on something like that and I either forgot to pray or perhaps the item I had put so much faith in was taken from me or lost, I would feel weaker and therefore be in a much more vulnerable state.
So, I enter every investigation knowing that I am enough. I am strong enough.
That being said, I’m also not afraid of any spirits following me home. It has happened occasionally, each time being someone who I feel had more to say and wasn’t ready to finish the conversation. In another instance, I believe the ghost of a child followed me home while I was pregnant.
These are spirits that I sought out on my own. I put myself in a position to find them. I opened the door of communication so it should come as no surprise that sometimes, they’re just not done talking. I’ve found that some more conversation and a polite request for them to leave is enough for them to vacate my house, but sometimes, I don’t even do that, and eventually they find their way out.
Many of our theories point to spirits having been living people. I don’t talk to them in a condescending way. I don’t claim to know what it’s like for them where they are and I would never assume to know where they need to be. I’m just polite and respectful like I am to any living being and so far that’s been enough.
That’s not to say that every spirit is kind and has great intentions. I’ve definitely met spirits who I felt weren’t necessarily nice in life and I have been firm and acted accordingly. These are people that I would much rather meet in spiritual form than in living form. We always say, the dead are much less scary than the living.
Thanks for reading and see you all Friday night at 9/8c on Travel Channel!
xoxo
PS. I feel like I need to add a disclaimer here that just because we do things a certain way doesn’t mean we feel that others who do things differently are wrong. These are just theories and ideas we personally subscribe too and that we’ve found many of our close colleagues and friends in the paranormal field have also arrived at.

Hi Amy, I put on a black tourmaline bracelet, on most places I go! When is the book coming out? And are you coming to Oregon, on a book tour? Laurence walchjr @gmail.com

100% perfectly said. I totally agree with the protection thought. I am the founder of a paranormal research team and that is exactly what my team does.
