Inside the Haunted Walls of Miss Lizzie’s Coffee: A Paranormal Circle Investigation

Special Livestream Investigation from Miss Lizzie’s Coffee in Fall River, Massachusetts

Most people are familiar with the infamous Lizzie Borden house on Second Street. But few know the horrific tragedy that took place next door—an event that affected another branch of the Borden family, 12 years before Lizzie was even born.

In 1848, Elizabeth “Eliza” Hathaway Darling Borden committed the unthinkable. A mother of three young children, she had been despondent and melancholy for days. In what can only be imagined as her darkest moment, Eliza took her two youngest children—one just six months old, the other under two—and threw them into the cistern in the basement, where they drowned. Some accounts claim she also threw her oldest child, aged three, into the cistern as well, though I’ve found no historical record to confirm that.

Reports say that Eliza then slit her own throat. While some versions claim she did this upstairs, according to the Fall River Times in 1848, the act actually took place in the cellar behind the chimney. Eliza was related to the Borden family by marriage. Her husband, Lawdwick Borden—the children’s father—was Lizzie Borden’s great-uncle on her father’s side, making those little ones Lizzie’s first cousins, once removed.

Rumors of a haunting in the building that now houses Miss Lizzie’s Coffee have been circulating for years. The current owners have generously granted us access for an exclusive livestream investigation for Paranormal Circle members. Their only request is that viewers consider donating to Postpartum Support International in recognition of the tragedy that unfolded in their basement.
